Pokémon TCG Live

On Pokémon TCG Live, I was a Generalist QA Tester, focusing on ensuring the quality of all aspects of the game, from the first-time user experience to in-game card logic.

My duties and responsibilities included:

  • Providing test coverage on Android, iOS, and PC platforms

  • Leading small test groups in executing focused test sessions on game features

  • Testing a wide array of gameplay systems, compatibility, crossplay, and other features

  • Serving as a liaison between developers and QA for upcoming builds/features

  • Assisting teammates with bug investigations

  • Executing and refining test cases to improve test execution

  • Filing detailed bugs in Jira for developer investigation

I worked on Pokémon TCG Live during its development phase from November 2020 to August 2021. My most significant contributions include testing a wide variety of cards and their game logic, and acting as a bridge between QA and the developers for upcoming builds/features.

Card Logic Testing:

The core experience of Pokémon TCG Live is playing against other players using a deck of Pokémon cards. I made sure that the cards performed as expected and according to Pokémon TCG rules.

I rigorously tested hundreds of Pokémon cards to ensure their interactions behaved as intended during matches. This involved researching how certain cards interact with others and ensuring they made legal moves for competitive play.

I filed numerous bugs in our Jira database, addressing issues with card logic and interactions with other cards. This resulted in issues being fixed by developers and Pokémon TCG Live staying true to TCG rules.

Leading Test Sessions:

During my time at Pokémon, I was granted the privilege to lead various test sessions that covered multiple areas of Pokémon TCG Live. The test sessions included coverage of card logic, customization, FTUE, item purchases/redemption, and more.

When handed the test session assignments from QA Leads, I reviewed the information to ensure I fully understood the expectations, desired results, and how the information was to be delivered after testing was complete. I then briefed a group of testers on the test session and delegated the work among everyone.

If testers encountered issues with understanding an intended behavior, device problems, or other matters, I swiftly acted to resolve their pain points. If I weren't able to solve the problem myself, I would reach out to the appropriate point of contact and collaborate with them on resolving the situation.

Once the test sessions were completed, I would document the results and formulate a report that was sent off to the QA Leads and developers. This helped increase coverage of designated areas of Pokémon TCG Live and gave leadership a better idea of the health of the game.
